My Career Story - Andy Mowat

"Looking back on our career, the journey is easy to tell as one logical path but the truth is it is emotional and we are all figuring it out as we go." Andy Mowat - co-founder of Whispered

I have reinvented my career many times.

  • Wall street banker

  • Private equity investor

  • CFO of a retail chain with 5,000 employees in eastern Europe

  • Launched a $150 million health club chain

  • Tried to buy a business with a private equity sponsor (and failed)

  • Started 2 companies (Gated and Prialto)

  • Scaled 4 Unicorns (Upwork, Box, Culture Amp and Carta)


I have had to do a proactive job-search four times:

  • During the ‘01 recession: coming out of Stanford Business School into the teeth of a terrible job market

  • During the ‘08 recession: I pivoted my career into tech and landed a role working directly for the CEO of Upwork

  • In 2015 I went from a startup to leading all post-sale operations at Box

  • In 2023 I wrapped up a startup and leapt back into big-tech to run GTM Operations at Carta


On the journey I have learned:


Along the way, many people have helped me with introductions and I discovered that I love to help others.  The number of people that call me for career advice has exploded over the years and as I’ve thought about what my Career 2.0 might look like, I’ve always known it would revolve around connecting people and helping with their careers.


Whispered didn’t start out fully formed.  A few years ago, I created a database for friends to share insights about companies they met in their search.  Thanks to the help of some great partners (who will remain quiet until they choose), Whispered has evolved into a complete platform to help people with the stresses of searching for their next executive role, including:
